The relationship between homeowners and their homes has always been… complicated. But with the added pressure from today’s shifting economic landscape, it’s become unclear whether homes serve more as a point of pride — or pain — for their owners.

To dig deeper, Hometap conducted a survey of 1,000 homeowners, asking questions about their sources of financial stress (no surprise: homeownership is a big one), if they feel income isn’t keeping pace with homeownership costs, the sacrifices and trade-offs that they’re making to alleviate spending, and the long-term affects these cutbacks have on their lives.

Though these responses give insight into an undoubtedly troubling situation, not all hope is lost. Despite everything — the costs, repairs, and bills — an overwhelming majority of homeowners (76%) still believe in the value of owning a home. In fact, over half (56.5%) say they still feel proud to be a homeowner — despite the stress.
